Claude Code Mods: Make Your AI Coding Tool Work Your Way

Anthropic’s new mods let developers change how Claude Code works. Teams can add useful features and controls to match their own workflow.

What Is New? On 1 October 2026, Anthropic introduced mods for Claude Code. Mods are small TypeScript functions that change its behaviour or interface. They are distributed through plugins and work in the CLI and desktop app. Claude by Anthropic What Can Mods Do? According to Anthropic, mods can change prompts, control tool calls and add interface elements. Its examples include showing build status, requesting confirmation before changes to production settings, and recording activity for review. These are announced capabilities, not results independently tested for this article. Claude by Anthropic A Simple Team Example Imagine a development team preparing a survey application for release. The team wants developers to notice failed tests before reviewing a change. A useful experiment would be a status panel showing whether the latest test run passed, failed or has not finished. This is a proposed use case. The team would need to build and test the integration before relying on it. The important rule is simple: “Tests not run” must never appear as “Tests passed.” How Should a Team Start?

  1. Choose one small problem. Start with displaying information rather than changing permissions.
  2. Use a test project. Keep customer information and production credentials out of the experiment.
  3. Ask a developer to review the mod. Check its code, dependencies and required access.
  4. Test different outcomes. Include successful tests, failed tests and missing results.
  5. Check how to disable it. Make sure the team can return to its normal workflow.
  6. Expand only after review. Add further features when the first experiment works reliably. These are recommended pilot steps, rather than a complete installation tutorial. Benefits and Limitations Customisation could help a team put useful information closer to its coding work. It could also make repeated checks easier to notice. However, custom code needs maintenance. A badly written control can interrupt useful work or create false confidence. Teams should measure whether a mod improves their workflow instead of assuming every custom feature is valuable. Is It Secure? Anthropic explicitly states that mods are not sandboxed and run with the same machine access as Claude Code. Only install code from trusted sources, and review it before use. A mod’s presence does not guarantee security. Claude by Anthropic Is It Free? The announcement does not establish that a free Claude account can use this feature. Check Claude Code access, plan requirements and usage charges before starting. The Main Takeaway Start with one small, reviewable improvement. A useful AI coding workflow should make the team’s work easier to understand, test and control.
