Claude Code Projects: From Simple Workspaces to Multi-Agent Orchestration
Anthropic has updated Claude Code Projects to help users manage multiple AI agents working on different tasks at the same time. A central coordinator can organize the work, while separate Claude Code threads handle individual tasks in parallel.
From a Simple Project Workspace to AI Agent Teams
Anthropic has introduced an updated Projects experience in Claude Code.
Earlier, a project could mainly be used to keep project files, instructions, and context together. The new approach adds support for managing multiple Claude Code agents that can work on different tasks in parallel.
The main idea is simple: instead of asking one AI session to handle everything, a project can coordinate several AI work sessions.
How the New Multi-Agent Workflow Works
The updated Projects experience works around a few main ideas:
Set a Main Goal
The user starts with a project and gives Claude a main goal or task.
The project can also have shared files, instructions, memory, and other project information that agents can use.
Break the Work into Smaller Tasks
A coordinator can organize the main goal into smaller tasks.
Different tasks can then be handled by different Claude Code threads instead of doing everything in one conversation.
Run Tasks in Parallel
Each thread can work on a separate task at the same time.
For example, one agent can work on a frontend change while another works on backend code or testing.
Separate Code Branches
Each thread runs as its own Claude Code cloud session with its own branch and copy of the repository.
This helps different agents work independently without immediately changing the same working branch.
Handle Code Conflicts
If two threads change the same code or files, the changes can create a merge conflict.
These conflicts are handled through the normal pull request and merge-conflict process, similar to how developers handle conflicts in Git.
Central Coordinator and Individual Threads
The new workflow gives users two ways to manage the work:
Project-Level View:
The main project view provides a high-level place to monitor and guide the overall work.Thread-Level View:
Users can open individual threads to see what a specific Claude Code agent is doing and provide additional instructions.
This makes it possible to manage the overall project while still having control over individual tasks.
Example
Imagine a developer wants to add a new feature to an application.
Instead of using one Claude Code session for everything:
- Agent 1 can work on the frontend.
- Agent 2 can work on the backend.
- Agent 3 can work on tests.
- Agent 4 can review or investigate another part of the project.
The project coordinator keeps these workstreams organized, while each thread works independently.
Why This Matters
This update shows a move from using AI as a single coding assistant toward using AI agents as a small development team.
The important change is not just that Claude can write code. It is that multiple Claude Code sessions can work on different parts of a larger task and be managed from one project.
This approach can help with:
- Parallel development
- Large coding tasks
- Task separation
- Project-level coordination
- Independent code branches
- Faster handling of complex workflows
Current Availability
The updated Projects experience was initially launched as a beta for selected Claude Pro and Max subscribers. Anthropic said access would expand to additional Claude plans and products.
At launch, the project threads run in the cloud. Support for local tools and local code was described as coming soon.
Overall, Claude Code Projects is moving toward a more coordinated multi-agent development workflow, where one project can manage several AI work sessions instead of relying on a single conversation.
